"Caushus
Clay, the Safety Raccoon" says
"People are our most important asset! Their safety and health is our greatest responsibility."
"We can and must control our farm related accidents. Farming is one of the oldest and most important occupations in existence. Unfortunately, it is also the most dangerous. In recent years, farming has surpassed mining and construction as the nation's deadliest occupation. Due to this startling fact, farm injury has become a major issue."
"Each
year thousands of adults and children die or are injured in farming
accidents. These may be due to out-dated unsafe equipment, or just plain
carelessness. Some mishaps involving children may be the result of something
else - curiosity. Children are naturally curious and energetic. Climbing,
hiding, and exploring are their entertainment. Sometimes this sense
of adventure can be disastrous, resulting in death or serious injury.
Accidents are the leading cause of death for children and youth aged
one to 24 years. And remember, no other industry takes their families
to work with them as farmers and ranchers do."
"Agriculture safety is serious business. Everyone recognizes how expensive an on-the-job-injury can be. It can mean down-time, pain and suffering for the injured and can cost a fortune in lost production, insurance increases, possible litigation, and a stream of financial nightmares. "You simply cannot afford to risk it."
The Colorado Farm Bureau Safety Program is designed to help reduce fatalities, injuries and property losses of our members. This is accomplished through programs and services that encourage greater safety awareness and low-cost safety products. While it is difficult to provide accurate figures on lives saved or injuries prevented by these programs, this member service has saved millions of dollars in equipment and property losses.
To help combat the rising injury rate in farming, Farm Bureau's Safety Department presents Safety Education programs to educate people about the dangers associated with agriculture.
A complete handbook with goals objectives, timetables, budget, promotion materials, letters, schedule, Instructor packets, demonstrations, certificates of completion, and thank you notes. With more than 40 possible demonstrations available from North Dakota's "Always Be Careful on the Farm, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids, Progressive Farmer Safety Day Camp s and the Colorado Farm Bureau Safety Day Camp Guide, Colorado Farm Bureau is ready to assist you in planning a Safety Day Camp event in your community.

Farm Bureau has developed a safety survey to help farmers and ranchers evaluate the level of safety on their operations. Hopefully members will be encouraged by noting safe practices currently in place, and motivated to address potential hazards that had not been previously recognized.

These Checklists are designed to aid in developing and assessing farm, home, and auto safety. Use them in conjunction with the Farm Safety Survey to insure that you are not overlooking a critical safety mistake.

Life Line Screening is the nation's leading provider for mobile vascular screenings and has been working with Farm Bureaus nationwide offering preventive health screenings using ultrasound technology looking for conditions that may be leading to stroke, heart attack, aortic aneurysm, peripheral artery disease and osteoporosis. They have recently added blood tests for glucose (diabetes), lipid panel (cholesterol, etc), and C - reactive protein. And, most recently, added an Afib test (similar to Ekg) to detect irregular heart beat. These screenings make people aware of potentially serious conditions that are difficult to detect or sometimes missed in a routine check-up.
Farm Bureau has partnered with Life Line Screening in an effort to bring additional health related options to the rural communities in Colorado. Members can attend "screening events" in their communities and receive screenings at reduced cost. For more information contact Life Line Screening Health Service Coordinator, Tina Bedard, at tinabeda@comcast.net or 303-933-3547. or Farm Bureau Safety and Health Coordinator Richard Connell at rconnell@colofb.com or 970-242-5590.
