"Caushus
Clay, the Safety Raccoon" says
"People are our most important asset! Their safety and health is our
greatest responsibility."
"We can and must control our farm related accidents. Farming is one
of the oldest and most important occupations in existence. Unfortunately,
it is also the most dangerous. In recent years, farming has surpassed
mining and construction as the nation's deadliest occupation. Due to
this startling fact, farm injury has become a major issue."
"Each
year thousands of adults and children die or are injured in farming
accidents. These may be due to out-dated unsafe equipment, or just plain
carelessness. Some mishaps involving children may be the result of something
else - curiosity. Children are naturally curious and energetic. Climbing,
hiding, and exploring are their entertainment. Sometimes this sense
of adventure can be disastrous, resulting in death or serious injury.
Accidents are the leading cause of death for children and youth aged
one to 24 years. And remember, no other industry takes their families
to work with them as farmers and ranchers do."
"Agriculture safety is serious business. Everyone recognizes how expensive
an on-the-job-injury can be. It can mean down-time, pain and suffering
for the injured and can cost a fortune in lost production, insurance
increases, possible litigation, and a stream of financial nightmares.
"You simply cannot afford to risk it."
The
Colorado Farm Bureau Safety Program is designed to help reduce fatalities,
injuries and property losses of our members. This is accomplished through
programs and services that encourage greater safety awareness and low-cost
safety products. While it is difficult to provide accurate figures on
lives saved or injuries prevented by these programs, this member service
has saved millions of dollars in equipment and property losses.
To help combat the rising injury rate in farming, Farm Bureau's Safety
Department presents Safety Education programs to educate people about
the dangers associated with agriculture.
